In a complaint filed in federal court, the FTC says that from 2012 to 2020,
Rite Aid deployed artificial intelligence-based facial recognition technology in
order to identify customers who may have been engaged in shoplifting or
other problematic behavior.
What company did Rite Aid merge with?
Walgreens
Walgreens. In October 2015, Walgreens Boots Alliance agreed to buy Rite-Aid
for about $17 billion, including debt, to boost Walgreens' U.S. footprint.
But in January 2017, the deal was scaled back, as Walgreens projected it
would need to sell as many as 1,200 Rite-Aid stores for the merger to
meet regulatory approval.

spiraling and revenue stagnant, Rite Aid's debt started to become too much of
a burden, and the company piled up nearly $3 billion in net losses since 2018.

Why did Rite Aid stock crash?
Deteriorating sales left the company with less money to invest in its businesses,
and more difficulty in paying back its debt. As of June, according to company filings,
it had $3.3 billion in debt, not counting the pending opioid litigation.
Rite Aid's stock has fallen nearly 80 percent since the start of the year.

Philadelphia-based Rite Aid has said since it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy seven months ago
