Celiac Disease Awareness Day

Celiac disease is a serious autoimmune disorder that affects every part of the body because of the body’s inability to digest gluten. Although the cause of the disease seems to be part of a person’s genetic makeup, most people do not know about the disease, thus most end up living with it without knowing. It’s important to raise awareness about this disease because those who don’t know about may never see it as a cause towards their own health issues. Here are some facts to know about Celiac Disease Awareness Day.

History of Celiac Disease Awareness Day

It’s been dubbed “Celiac Disease Awareness Day” in honor of Dr. Samuel Gee who identified a link between celiac disease and diet. This date commemorates the birth of Dr. Samuel Gee, who found that the cause of an autoimmune reaction to gliadin, a gluten protein found in wheat. With this discovery he has helped thousands of people who never knew they had celiac disease discover better ways to live longer and happier. In his conclusion the only way to treat celiac disease is to live a lifelong gluten-free diet.

The day was introduced in the Senate on August 3rd 2010, and with the Senate recognizing the day, it also recognized the importance of being aware of celiac disease. Celiac disease can cause serious complications from skin rashes and lactose intolerance to infertility, bone weakness and nerve damage. However, at least 83% of the population generally doesn’t know if they have celiac disease. It affects 1 in 333 people per year and the earlier a person starts to avoid gluten, the better they are off with their health. Although the disease generally is found more in children, children have a better ability to heal their small intestine with the gluten free diet than adults.

History of Roald Dahl Day

Roald Dahl has a truly amazing history, and it all started in 1916 in Cardiff, Wale, where he was born to Norwegian parents Sofie Magdalene Dahl and Harald Dahl. He lost both his sister and his father at the age of three, but his mother chose to remain in Wales to honor his father wishes that he be educated in British schools. From there he continued to Repton School in Derbyshire, where one of his most important works would be conceived. Cadbury regularly sent chocolate bars to the school to be tested by the students, which led to Roald having dreams of creating a chocolate bar so delicious that Mr. Cadbury would praise it. If you guessed this was the origins of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory you’re dead on.

What you may not know is that he went on to be a Fighter Ace during WWII, and had a long and distinguished career in which he fought in some of the most significant air battles of the war. Ultimately he started experiencing severe headaches that prevented him from flying, and spent the rest of his career working as a diplomat, writer, and intelligence officer. It was during this time that he wrote The Gremlins his first children’s book, and it was written for Walt Disney Productions to promote a full-length film that remained unmade. From there on out he continued writing prolifically, creating some of the most popular stories in history.

1993: Nirvana released their third and final studio album In Utero. The album would go on to enter the Billboard 200 Album Chart at number one & sell five million copies in the U.S.

1991: At the Re-bar in Seattle, Nirvana got thrown out of their own party for the launch of Nevermind due to starting a food fight.

1991: Alice Cooper sold copies of his latest album Hey Stoopid for 99 cents during a performance at Times Square in New York City.

1989: Sting made his American stage debut in the role of Macheath in The Threepenny Opera in Washington, DC.

1976: Aerosmith peaked at number eleven on the Billboard 200 Album Chart with Toys in the Attic their first album to reach the top forty on the Billboard 200 Album chart. It later went on to sell eight million copies in the U.S.

1969: John Lennon and the Plastic Ono Band made their live debut with Eric Clapton on guitar in Toronto during the Toronto Rock and Roll Revival Festival at Varsity Stadium. Other acts on the bill included Bo Diddley, Gene Vincent, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Alice Cooper and The Doors. During Alice Cooper’s set, a chicken made its way onto the stage and Cooper threw it over the crowd expecting it to fly. Instead it plummeted into the audience where it was torn to pieces.

1969: Santana’s debut album entered the Billboard 200 Album Chart. The album would go on to peak at number four and sell two million copies.

1965: The Beatles released “Yesterday” which went on to become the most covered song of any song ever written with over 1,600 versions recorded.
