Fight Procrastination Day

Procrastination can really be the bane of our existence, with another day coming around the corner, there’s no real reason that we can’t put it off till tomorrow is there? Of course not, and tomorrow has another tomorrow, so let’s do it again! It is by this way of thinking that absolutely nothing gets done, and we know good and well that procrastination is us out to get ourselves. But what can we do? Fight Procrastination Day reminds us that it’s up to us to beat this monster, and only we can decide to get up and get done today what was supposed to be done.

History of Fight Procrastination Day

Fight Procrastination Day tells us to get up in arms and start battling the age old beast that is “putting things off”. There are a million techniques to battle it, but procrastination is decidedly an epic level raid monster, and sometimes it seems like a concerted effort of us and our most efficient friends is the only thing that will put it down. The fight against procrastination has been going on a long time, and there have been some really creative methods created to fight it, all to varying success.

What kind of crazy techniques? How about Victor Hugo and James Riley choosing to write naked so it wasn’t a simple matter to head out to drink with the boys at the local pub?

Not necessarily a universally practical method, but it definitely has its high points. Then there are modern versions that are truly remarkable, programs that you download onto your computer that act as a filter according to the rules you set up… Ya know, like if you work at home and want to use it to control your behavior during work hours?

As long as there has been language, there has been poetry, taking the shadowed hearts of men and women and finding ways to twist the abstract feelings and experiences of perception into the rising and falling rhythms of the spoken or written word. The spiritual and emotional experiences of mankind cannot be written in simple phrases or plain sentences bound by the rules of grammar and sense, sometimes our inner madness must be expressed through chaos. Such is the purpose of Random Acts of Poetry Day, to unleash the human voice within us and share it with the world.

Every year on the first Wednesday of October, a type and class of people emerge from their shuttered libraries and steam filled coffee shops. In hand they carry chalk and pen, page and dream, and head out into the wild lands of the mundane and banal to spread their hearts blood on the blank page that is the modern world. Who are these intrepid souls? Poets of every stripe, every background, every heritage heading out into the world to ensure that we all have, for just a moment, a poetic and spiritual day.

2003: Neil Young’s movie Greendale which is based on the concept album of the same name premiered at the Toronto Film Festival.

1990: Credence Clearwater Revival guitarist Tom Fogerty died due to complications from AIDS acquired during a blood transfusion.

1989: Neil Young received the Video of the Year award at the MTV Video Music Awards for “This Note’s For You” which was initially banned by MTV because it mentioned corporate sponsors. The show also featured performances by The Cult, The Rolling Stones, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers with Axl Rose, and Def Leppard.

1980: The Rolling Stones peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with “Emotional Rescue” which was their nineteenth top ten single in the U.S.

1975: Red Octopus by Jefferson Starship began the first of four non-consecutive weeks on top of the Billboard 200 Album Chart.

1975: ZZ Top peaked at number twenty on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with “Tush” which was the group’s first top 40 single.

1970: Jimi Hendrix performed his final concert when he appeared at the Love and Peace Festival on the Isle of Fehmarn, Germany.

1968: Eric Clapton recorded the guitar solo for The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”.

1965: The Rolling Stones began recording “Get Off of My Cloud” at RCA Studios in Hollywood. The song would reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart two months later.
