Re: Eastern Tribe of Cherokee (who hid in Smokey Mts and US calvary could never find/make leave that area)
They had a member who developed way to write the Cherokee language.
It is one of few times Ever in history one man, from a pre-literate group, created original (and practical/usable) alphabet for a spoken language by himself.
Sequoyah, Cherokee silversmith and inventor - approx 1821 he created "Cherokee syllabary" enabling Cherokee language to be written.
It was quickly learned and used among the Cherokee people.
The Cherokee were more literate in writing their language at that time than most the European settlers around them!
Around 1828, with help of missionaries, Cherokee Phoenix became the first Cherokee newspaper printed in both Cherokee & English.
Sequoyah's Dream: to see the "splintered" Cherokee nation re-united.....
