Over here in CA they don't allow sales of decent potency rat poison. Takes 5 days to kill and I ain't into torturing creatures.
I use the classic wood n metal Victor traps to keep rats out of my truck engine bay. Wrap the metal trigger with cotton string and tie a knot. Impregnate the string with peanut butter so they bite n pull the trigger. Gets them every time.
For mice you can probably mix baking soda into some peanut butter and leave it out for them to consume. The concept is they'll get gas and die. Never tried just something I heard.
I have a good owl population here so mice aren't an issue.
